Final Piece: Ire

April 20, 2015

Final Piece:

Ire
(features Ragnar Lothbrook, Britton Buford, Cameron Buford, Sophie Robinson)

Guidelines and Process:

"Choose from all the processes we have used so far."

I chose four people. I took a photo of them (Ragnar's was from a scene from the TV show Vikings) and drew them with graphite. I added ink to their faces based on an emotion that represents them. The emotion I chose was anger. Ragnar has a patient anger. Britton has an icy, cold anger. Cameron has a fiery, hot anger. Sophie has a delicate, yet bold anger.

Generative: MNCC Reborn

March 4, 2015

Generative:

MNCC Reborn

Guidelines and Process:

"Generative art is art that in whole or part has been created with the use of an autonomous system. An autonomous system in this context is generally one that is non-human and can independently determine features of an artwork that would otherwise require decisions made directly by the artist.
For this assignment you will come up with your own system that will “generate” and determine the majority of the composition."

TRIBUTE TO MNCC:
In high school, I was a co-president of workout club (with two of my best friends) titled Miner Nation CrossTraining Club. On the club website we posted daily workouts. This project was developed using that website: pchswc.com. I used the structure and posts of the club website to generate this piece. The process was complex, but here is a summary of the artistic process: I rolled various combinations of dice to determine a year, month, and day between 2012 and 2014 (the years the club was running with my two friends and I still in high school). I then chose the first movement of that particular day's workout. I did this 20 times, then categorized them according to the movements (cleans and deadlift, cardio, pull ups and push ups, bench, squat, Final Word). I chose images that the name of each workout made me think of. Then I created a 5 x 4 grid, assigning a background color for each of the six categories, and arranged them in diagonal lines (the Hero WODs have a gold background). Finally, I added blue diagonal lines to the WODs which had comments on that day's blog post. There was a little more to it, but that is the basic process.

Gestalt: Idols

March 18, 2015

Gestalt:

Idols

Guidelines and Process:

"Gestalt is a German word that is generally associated with psychology. It means an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts. You will come up with your own project based on the concepts of gestalt theory, which we will discuss in class."

I used gouache paints and ink. This piece is made up of two faces from the same person: Elliott Hulse. The calm side is created with pointillism. The screaming side is created with scratchy, chaotic line work.

Collaboration: Skies Last Line

February 18, 2015

Collaboration:

Skies Last Line

Guidelines and Process:

"I will pair you each up with someone to cooperate with in producing a new work of art. You will each be assigned an element and principle of art to represent. You will each being your own piece and then exchange it back and forth several times to build up several layers. In the end you will each have one last chance to add a layer to the work in order to make it "yours"."

I used gouache and colored pencil. I created the ink background, the pillars, and the red with blue lines and circles. My partner used gouache. They created the brown and green/blue shapes.

Out of Context: Wilderness of the Mind

February 9, 2015

Out of Context:

Wilderness of the Mind

Guidelines and Process:

"Trace pieces of objects and shapes out of magazines or books. Never trace complete objects. Create a new context for these images by misrepresenting them and taking them out of context."

I traced most of my shapes from outdoor magazines. For the background I filled a cooking pan with water, put drops of ink in it, then laid the paper on the surface. I used gouache paint to fill the shapes and add color.

Variation: Apartment Five

January 28, 2015

Variation:

Apartment Five

Guidelines and Process:

"For this project you will use variations of the theme of triangles."

I copied pages of my math homework and notes. I soaked them in linseed oil. In addition, I soaked the triangular shapes in yerba mate (an herbal tea from South America). Finally, I added white pieces of paper to create contrast.

Reconfigure: Cosmos Wording

Guidelines and Process:

"Cut out an alphabet. Shape and configure the letters into something new. You do not need to keep the letter whole. The image you create should not be about the letters but rather new shapes you create. Once you've glued down your composition you will make a xerox copy of it and then using your Chartpak maker you will do a transfer of the image onto nice paper. You will then add color to the image."

I used colored pencil and ink.
